Cyclone Asani likely to impact Andaman, Bangladesh and Myanmar

New Delhi, March 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that Cyclone Asani will have the greatest impact on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. While the Indian mainland is unlikely to be affected.

According to satellite projections, cyclone ‘Asani’ will have no impact on the Indian mainland except the Andamans, though Bangladesh and Myanmar will be in the path of the storm.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast in a few locations across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall possible over the Nicobar Islands. All fishermen have been warned not to go into the Andaman Sea or the Bay of Bengal.

It was centred about 110 kilometres north-northwest of Car Nicobar as of 08.30 a.m. on Sunday (Nicobar Islands). According to the most recent IMD bulletin, the weather system is currently classified as a Low Pressure Area that is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm by Monday with wind speeds of up to 90 kmph.
