Hazaribag, Aug 6: Fed up with debt, a man in Ichak hanged himself last night. His wife said he had taken a loan from a local man which he failed to pay resulting in mental tension for him. Santosh Saw (45) died due to hanging in his village Kariyatpur.

Santosh’s wife Reena Devi said her husband was in the habit of taking alcohol regularly. And after coming home, he often used to fight with them, she said.

On Saturday night at around 10 pm, he came home after drinking alcohol and beat his wife, sons and daughter. He kicked all out of the house. Reena said they stayed in the other’s house for the entire night. When they returned home in the morning, the door was open. On going inside the house, they saw him hanging.

Reena said Santosh had taken such a step under the pressure of debt. He had purchased an auto a few days back. But the man who gave him a loan pulled the vehicle after Santosh failed to pay the instalment of the loan. Even Santosh’s daughter suffered a mishap and was left with a broken hand. Santosh was to take her to a doctor on Monday. But destiny had something else in store as he committed suicide. Some villagers said that he had become addicted to alcohol and gambling. A few days ago he sold his land too and wasted the money on gambling and alcohol.

The death of Santosh landed his family in trouble as he was the sole breadwinner of the family. Santosh is survived by his wife Reena and three children, his one son is about 18 years old.

Police officials said they have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for postmortem to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital. “We are probing the case to know the exact reason behind death,” the officials added.
