New Delhi, Dec 3: In a stone-pelting case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, a Delhi court today acquitted former JNU students’ union leader Umar Khalid in lack of evidence.
The Karkardooma court in Delhi also cleared Khalid Saifi, another prominent student leader, along with Umar Khalid. The student leaders are currently being held in judicial detention after being prosecuted under the anti-terrorist law UAPA.
In a UAPA case involving the riots in the nation’s capital that resulted in 53 deaths and more than 700 injuries, the Delhi High Court rejected Umar Khalid’s request for bail in October.
After being detained by the Delhi Police in September 2020, Umar Khalid vehemently denied having any “criminal role” in the violence or “conspiratorial connect” with any of the other suspects.
