New Delhi, Dec.9: A Delhi court has granted bail to Sharjeel Imam in connection with his accused delivery of an inflammatory speech at Jamia Milia Islamia, which resulted in riots outside the campus in December 2019.

On January 25, 2020, Delhi Police filed a FIR against him under IPC sections 124 A (sedition) and 153 A (promoting or attempting to promote disharmony or feelings of hatred on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community, or any other cause whatsoever).

On January 28, 2020, Sharjeel Imam was apprehended in Jehanabad, Bihar.

In April 2020, Delhi Police accused Sharjeel Imam with sedition, stating that his speech stoked racial tensions in the Jamia Millia Islamia University neighbourhood, resulting in riots.

In its inquiry, the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch discovered that Sharjeel Imam had given provocative remarks at Jamia University and Aligarh. A probe into his role in the Delhi riots is being conducted.

Sharjeel Imam in his plea, told a Delhi court in October 2021 that he is not a terrorist and that his prosecution is the “whip of a monarch rather than a government constituted by law.”
