New Delhi, Aug 4: Congress leader Jagdish Tytler was granted anticipatory bail by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Friday in the case involving the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This is prior to his Saturday court appearance, for which a summons was issued after the court acknowledged the case’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chargesheet.

Tytler is protected from arrest by the anticipatory bail set by the court. The bail was granted on a Rs 1 lakh bail bond.

In the chargesheet filed by the CBI on May 20, it was claimed that Tytler “incited, instigated and provoked the mob” gathered at the Pul Bangash Gurdwara in Azad Market on November 1, 1984, which led to the gurdwara’s burning and the deaths of three Sikhs, Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Guru Charan Singh.

On November 1, 1984, the day after the murder of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, three persons were slain and a gurdwara was set on fire in the Pul Bangash area. In addition to other allegations, the agency has brought charges against Tytler under Sections 147 (rioting), 109 (abetment), and Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The CBI gathered Tytler’s speech samples on April 11 in order to compare them to the case’s audio evidence. But Tytler has consistently said that there is no proof against him. Jagdish Tytler declared that he is ready to hang himself if there is proof against him after providing the CBI with a voice sample.
