Delhi: Sarai Kale Khan Chowk Renamed Birsa Munda Chowk

Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announces the renaming of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk to honor tribal leader and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

New Delhi: On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of tribal leader and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Union Minister for Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar announced the renaming of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk as Birsa Munda Chowk. The announcement was made at a ceremony near the ISBT bus stand, where a statue of Munda was also unveiled.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Manohar Lal Khattar, and Delhi LG VK Saxena were present at the event, which aimed to pay homage to Munda’s enduring legacy and inspire citizens with his contributions to India’s freedom struggle.

A Symbol of Inspiration for Delhi and Beyond

Khattar stated, “The big chowk outside the ISBT bus stand here will now be known after Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Seeing this statue and the name of the chowk, not only the citizens of Delhi but also visitors to the International Bus Stand will be inspired by his life.”

The renaming ceremony highlighted the government’s efforts to recognize the significant contributions of tribal leaders in India’s history.

Birsa Munda: The Hero of India’s Tribal Freedom Struggle

Known as ‘Dharti Aba’ or ‘Father of the Earth,’ Birsa Munda led tribal uprisings in the Chotanagpur region during the early 19th century. His movement, “Ulgulan” or “The Rebellion,” opposed British policies of land grabbing and exploitation, advocating for self-ownership of land and tribal rights.

Munda’s teachings also founded the faith of Birsait, blending indigenous beliefs and monotheism. His leadership empowered tribals in Bihar and Jharkhand, making him a pioneering figure in India’s tribal history.

Despite passing away at the young age of 25, Munda’s influence remains significant. In 2021, the Central Government declared November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ to honor his legacy.
