New Delhi: A powerful thunderstorm that swept through Delhi-NCR in the early hours of Friday brought much-needed respite from the heat but also left a trail of devastation, including a heartbreaking incident in Najafgarh, where a 26-year-old woman and her three minor children lost their lives after their house collapsed.
House Collapse In Kharkhari Nagar
The tragedy occurred in Kharkhari Nagar village of Jafarpur Kalan, where a large tree, uprooted due to strong winds, fell over a small residential structure near a tubewell. The house collapsed under the weight, burying the family inside.
According to police, the husband survived but sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. Emergency teams from the Delhi Fire Services and local police rushed to the site after receiving a distress call at 5:26 AM.
“The woman and her three children were found trapped under debris and were declared dead on arrival,” said a police officer at the scene. Their bodies have been sent for postmortem, and an investigation is underway to ascertain further details.
Attempts to reach Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh for a comment have so far been unsuccessful.
City-Wide Disruptions
The early morning rain and thunderstorm disrupted life across the national capital. Key stretches of roads, including NH24 near Vinod Nagar, were heavily waterlogged, causing major traffic snarls.
Air travel was also affected. Officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport reported that at least three flights were diverted and over 100 flights delayed due to inclement weather conditions.
Relief Marred By Loss
While the showers brought respite from the ongoing heatwave, the loss of lives and significant disruption across the city highlighted Delhi’s fragile urban infrastructure in the face of extreme weather.
