Dhanbad, May 18: Senior professor of Birsa Institute of Technology (BIT) Sindri Girjesh Kumar said that despite plenty of water resources in the district, Dhanbad is facing 68 percent water scarcity to cater its requirement.
Prof. Kumar, while addressing a seminar on ‘Water Conservation’ organised by Sindri College Sindri under ‘Amrit Mahotav’ programme in the premises on Wednesday, said that Dhanbad requires around 270 million gallon water per day but gets merely 87 million gallon.
“The district faces a deficit of 183.6 million gallon per day”, he said. Prof Anil Kumar of Sindri College Sindri conducted the programme while principal Prof Nakul Prasad proposed a vote of thanks.
He added that there is no dearth of ground water resources in Dhanbad. If proper arrangement is made for purification of mine water in different sectors, water scarcity could be solved.
He expressed concern that the 55 percent available water goes for waste per day. He said if we succeed in tapping this water, the water problem could be solved to some extent.
Prof said that per day domestic requirement of water in Dhanbad is 135 million gallon, 40 million gallon for industrial requirement, 2.5 million gallon for public utilization, 15 million gallon for fire tender department. However, they fail to save 55 percent available water.
97 percent of available water in the world is salted. Only 3 percent water is fresh among which 2 percent is covered with glacier. Major crisis would appear in the future if we fail to initiate proper steps for water conservation right now.
