Dhanbad, March 13: Rahul Kumar of Jamshedpur defeated Jishu Kumar of Jamtara district in the final to bag the singles title of the Jharkhand – Bengal open badminton tournament organised by Maithon Badminton Club (MBC) on Monday.
In the final played at Maithon Badminton club Maithon on Sunday evening Jamshedpur’s Rahul defeated Jishu 21-17, 21-12 in the final. In the first set, Jishu fought neck and neck for every point but in the second set he looked tired and surrendered.
However, Jishu pairing with Ejajul won the doubles title of the championship beating Rishi and Prakash pair of Kharagpur (West Bengal) in three sets 21-19, 19-21 and 21- 12. First, two sets of doubles final witnessed equally matched. Jishu and Ejaju pair won the first set in a nail-biting encounter 21-19. But the Kharagpur pair fought back in the second set and won 21-19 to level the score.
However, in the decider, Jamtara pair displayed superior skills and won 21-12.
Earlier, Sunny Mazumdar of Chitranjan (Bengal) won the junior singles title of the tournament defeating Prabhakar Jha of Maithon (Dhanbad) 15-07, 15-09 in the final.
Vijayat Ranjan, chief executive officer (CEO) of Maithon Power Limited (MPL) was the chief guest in the prize distribution ceremony and former Nirsa MLA Arup Chatterjee guest of honour.
Besides officers of MPL and DVC, office bearers of Maithon Badminton Club Dipto Chatterjee, Jhandi Chakraborty, Aman Kumar, KP Rao, Asim Chakraborty, Sumit Sab, Ritesh Pandey, Anuj Paan, Harshit Kumar, Anurag Kashyap were also present.
