Dhanbad, Dec 22: G.A. Srinivasa Murthy, director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad said that machines and mechanisms need not be complex rather they should be simple enough to handle, maintain and manufacture.

Murthy, who was addressing the 2nd International and 14th National Conference on Industrial Problems on Machines & Mechanisms  (IPRoMM) as chief guest at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad said that all Industries nowadays, be it the automobile industry or aerospace industry prefer such types of machinery, mechanism and tools which are simple in application and mechanisms.

He also invited students of IIT (ISM) at, DRDL to witness the machines and technologies, while emphasising the need for greater interaction between Industry and Academia which was not much in practice in past but has increased during recent times as per the necessity of the time.

The conference was organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of IIT (ISM), which also witnessed discussion on developing machines having high-end technologies but having simple mechanisms.

“The industry, institute and laboratories will have to work together to fill the gap and basic research is required at the institute level itself as per the practical issues being faced by the Industries on the ground,” he said.

Industry leaders and top academicians congregated at IIT (ISM) International  Conference highlighting the need for increased interaction between Industry and institute in order to fill the existing gap.

The eminent experts from across the country also emphasized the need for motivating students to spend more time in labs giving shape to ideas and fabricating tools and machines rather than only concentrating on theory classes and software development.

Prof Rajiv Shekhar, director, of IIT (ISM) who presided over the function shed light on the significance of motivating and guiding the students to give equal focus on fabrication rather than software etc.

“As an academic institute we have to reorient them to make hardware rather than only concentrating on software,” he said and added that software is of no use without a lab.

He informed IIT (ISM) has taken the initiative to provide space and facilities for the students to work on innovative ideas by establishing Naresh Vashisht Centre for Tinkering & Innovation (NVCTI).

Prof Amit Rai Dixit, HoD (Mechanical Engg) & Chairman (IPRoMM 2022) informed about existing facilities and activities of the department of mechanical engineering while Prof. Sanjoy Kumar Ghoshal, convener of IPRoMM in his address gave details of the conference.
