Dhanbad, April 20: The students’ unions of the Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) Dhanbad are on the boil over the implementation of a new exam regulation which they allege has failed hundreds of students in semester-2 due to a lack of information.
Under the new regulation of the university, students have to obtain passing marks in both internal and external examinations. If they fail in any one (internal or external examination), they will be declared unsuccessful.
According to the unions, in the old regulation, students had to obtain a total of 40% marks (including internal and external examinations both) to pass. But now, 40% of marks are mandatory in both internal as well as external examinations separately.
The new regulation was implemented by the previous vice-chancellor Dr Anjani Kumar Srivastava in the 2020 academic session.
Rattled by the impact of the new regulation on students, delegations of AJSU Chhatra Sangh and National Students Union of India (NSUI) separately met the BBMKU examination controller Dr Suman Kumar Barnwal and Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Dr Devjani Biswas to lodge their protest.
They demanded the authorities to hold seminars in all colleges of the university to make the students aware of this regulation on a priority basis.
“We are not against the new regulation but we demand to make the students aware of it. The previous vice-chancellor abruptly introduced it without making the students aware. This resulted in hundreds of students failing the exams,” said Vishal Mahto, president of AJSU Chhatra Sangh.
He said that his union also opposed the new regulation’s mandatory 50% success in four papers in the first and second semesters.
Vishal Mahto further said that though the DSW has assured to do the needful in the interest of students but a delegation will also meet the vice-chancellor Dr Mukul Narayan Dev whenever he comes to Dhanbad to correct the irregularities in the new regulation.
Meanwhile, NSUI activists also gheraoed the examination controller over the poor result of students due to the new regulation and demanded decisions in the interest of students.
NSUI district president Gopal Krishna Choudhary said that university authorities will not be allowed to ruin the careers of students in the name of the new regulation. They will have to take steps in the interest of students otherwise the union will launch a stir.
