Dhanbad, May 26: Five years old Dhanbad district Sadar Hospital has set up a blood storage unit to cater requirements of emergency and anaemic patients.

Till now, due to the lack of a blood storage facility, the hospital authorities had to refer the patient, especially anaemic and delivery cases to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) at the last moment for better treatment.

While making the storage operational Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Alok Vishwakarma said that in the first phase, 14 units of blood storage capacity has been set up and in the second phase hospital would increase the facility.

“Installation of 14 units of blood storage would ensure that now no patients would be referred to the medical college hospital for blood in an emergency. Now, we would be able to cater to the requirements of anaemic and delivery patients,” said the Civil Surgeon.

The patients of the hospital also got a sigh of relief. One of the patients Muni Devi (50), a resident of Devipara, Hirapur said that after blood facility in the Sadar hospital, she would now not require to go 6 km away to SNMMCH, which was costly and harassing.

The Dhanbad Sadar Hospital was merged with the then Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH) in 1982 by the Bihar government to save the institution from de-recognition of Medical Council of India (MCI) in a lack of 500 beds facilities.

However, on efforts of MLA Raj Sinha and a High Court order, 100 beds Dhanbad Sadar Hospital was made operational again in 2019.

“Per day around 168 patients turn up in the OPD in different faculties in the hospital and now we are trying to provide corporate nursing homes like facilities to patients with especial focus on surgery and institutional delivery,” said deputy superintendent  Dr Sanjiv Kumar, who is himself  MD in gynaecology and obstetrics.

Dr Vishwakarma said that Sadar Hospital would soon run Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “Though at present the hospital has only two GNMs,  I have sought permission from the health department to start it with ANM after imparting training to them”, said the Civil Surgeon.
