New York: Following the death of Jimmy Carter at the age of 100, Donald Trump, now 78, has become the oldest living former US president. Carter, who served as the 39th President from 1977 to 1981, was the longest-living US president and the first to reach 100 years.
Trump, 22 days older than George HW Bush, won the 2024 general election and is set to return to office on January 20, 2025, after President Joe Biden steps down. At the time of his swearing-in, Trump will be six months away from his 79th birthday.
Biden, at 82, remains the oldest sitting president and will hold the title of the oldest former president once Trump is inaugurated. By the end of his second term on August 15, 2028, Trump will set a record as the oldest US president.
Living Former Presidents Ranked by Age
Following Trump and Biden, the next oldest living former presidents are George Bush and Bill Clinton, both 78, and Barack Obama at 63.
Jimmy Carter’s Legacy
Jimmy Carter, known for his commitment to peace, human rights, and humanitarian work, passed away a year after his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who died in November 2023 at 96. He is survived by four children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The Carter Center announced public observances will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with a private interment in Plains, Georgia. The state funeral’s final arrangements, including public events and motorcade routes, are pending.
National Mourning Period
In line with federal law, flags on all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels will remain at half-staff for 30 days to honor Carter’s passing.
