Philadelphia: With the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump fast approaching, Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, shared a humorous insight into their dynamic as a couple. In a recent interview on the Pod Save America podcast, Emhoff revealed that despite being an accomplished lawyer himself, he has never won a debate against Harris.
Emhoff, who was a prominent trial lawyer specializing in intellectual property and entertainment law before his wife became Vice President, shared his admiration for Harris’s debating skills. When asked by host Tommy Vietor what the public should expect in her upcoming face-off with Trump on September 10, Emhoff playfully admitted, “I haven’t won one [debate].”
He went on to describe Harris as a “great debater” and a “first-class trial lawyer.” Reflecting on their conversations, he said, “It’s not like we’re in a formal debate, but when we’re discussing something, she’ll lay little traps along the way, and I realize, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing!’”
Before entering politics, Kamala Harris served as the district attorney of San Francisco and later as the attorney general of California. Emhoff, on the other hand, was a partner at DLA Piper in Los Angeles, focusing on media law. The couple, who celebrated their 10-year anniversary in August, have both had successful legal careers.
Emhoff further expressed his pride in Harris, saying, “Kamala Harris was exactly the right person for me at an important time in my life. At this moment in this nation’s history, she is exactly the right president.”
The upcoming debate, scheduled for September 10, will be the first direct confrontation between Harris and Trump, with ABC News set to host the event at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Leading up to the debate, the two campaigns have exchanged sharp remarks over the debate format and rules, particularly concerning whether microphones will remain unmuted throughout.
Speaking about Trump’s unpredictable nature, Emhoff remarked, “It’s Donald Trump, so who the hell knows what you’re going to get, but I know from her she’s going to be talking about us, she’s going to be talking about the American people.”
As anticipation builds, all eyes are on this highly awaited debate, which marks the beginning of a crucial phase in the U.S. presidential race.
