Jamshedpur, Oct 17: A 60-year-old man identified as Shivcharan Sardar was beaten to death by a neighbour for allegedly sending a love letter to a young woman who is a close relative of the assailant. The incident took place at Tetla village under Potka police station about 25 km from here late last night, triggering a sensation in the area.
The police arrested the assailant, Mahendra Sardar today and sent the body to the MGM medical college mortuary for postmortem.
Shivcharan, who was a resident of the same village, was sitting on a cemented platform in front of his house at around 10.30 pm when Mahendra came there furiously. After a brief argument with the elderly man, Mahendra picked up a stick from his residential premises and started thrashing the man.
The 28-year-old assailant continued to hit the victim until the latter fell on the ground motionless. When the fellow villager rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion, the assailant told them that he killed the elderly man as he had sent a love letter to his sister-in-law. A police party reached the village early in the morning and arrested Mahendra.
Potka police station officer-in-charge Ravindra Singh Munda who probed the matter said the assailant killed the old man without knowing the truth.
“The woman in question is 23-year-old. On Sunday evening, the murder victim had given his mobile phone number to the assailant’s wife, asking her to give it to the said woman so that she may call her whenever she would face any trouble. Sometime later, when the two women were talking over the matter between themselves, Mahendra overheard their conversation partially and made up an idea that Shivcharan must be trying to develop relationships with his sister-in-law. Then only he prompted to kill the man without knowing the truth,” elaborated the OC while talking to lagatar.24.com.
