New Delhi, Aug 28: The much-anticipated election for the new President of Congress will take place on October 17, and the ballots will be counted two days later, on October 19. This announcement was made by the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision-making body in Congress. Starting on September 24, nominations must be submitted, and the deadline is September 30.
Sonia Gandhi, the president of the Congress, presided over the CWC meeting while she was virtually present because she was travelling abroad for medical treatment.
The meeting takes place just days after Ghulam Nabi Azad, a former veteran and G-23 dissident, explosively resigned from the party, denouncing Rahul Gandhi for his “childish behaviour,” “glaring immaturity,” and for allowing a “coterie of untrained sycophants” to rule the party. He also attacked Rahul Gandhi for “demolishing the party’s entire consultation structure” in his letter to party leader Sonia Gandhi.
On September 22, the results of the election will be announced, and on October 8, candidates may withdraw their nominations.
