Elephant tramples old man in Latehar

Daltonganj, Dec 2: A 60-year old man identified as Mahadev Ganjhu of Vishunpur village’s Tharya Tola under the Balumath block in Latehar was trampled to death by an elephant today.

Forester Liyaqat informed that the deceased had gone to the jungle with his cattle when he was attacked by the elephant. He died on the spot.

A herd of 16 elephants is roaming in the block area of Balumath and is posing risk and hazard to life and property.

Sources said in the past ten months elephants have taken the lives of nearly a dozen people in the Balumath range. The herd of the elephant is said to be of Chatra – Hazaribagh region.

The next of kin of the deceased is to get Rs. 4 lakh but it will take time. So, as an immediate relief, Rs.1 lakh either in two or three installments will be provided to the kin of the deceased.
