Dhanbad, Dec 30: The exodus of retired senior professors of medical colleges from the state continued despite a lucrative offer from the state government. In course of the exodus, Dr Shailendra Kumar, retired principal of Medinirai Medical College Hospital, Palamu joined Ram Krishna Institute of Medical Science, Durgapur in West Bengal on Thursday.
Earlier Dr Arun Kumar, retired principal of Phulo Jhano Medical College Dumka had joined a medical college in Muzaffarpur (Bihar). Dr Arun Kumar and Dr Shailendra Kumar were senior professors in PSM and FMT departments and medical colleges in the state need senior teachers in both faculties on a contract basis but they preferred the offer of other states.
The exodus of Dr Arun Kumar and Dr Shailendra Kumar is not an isolated case albeit most of the senior professors of the state after retirement, prefer the medical colleges of Bihar and Bengal despite lucrative offers in Jharkhand.
Prof Vijay Shankar, HoD medicine, signed the contract for joining after retirement but backed out later. Prof Kailash Prasad, Hod orthopaedics, preferred to stay at home despite living in Dhanbad after retirement.
Similarly, Prof RN Mishra, HoD physiology joined on contract after retirement but left after a few months. Prof Rajnikant Sinha, HoD eye in Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical Hospital (SNMMCH) retired last month but he preferred to rest at home.
Though most of the retired professors avoided pointing out the reason for not accepting offers from the Jharkhand government for working on contract, one of the retired professors Dr Sriram Pratap Sinha, former HoD paediatrics of Patliputra Medical College Hospital (PMCH) Dhanbad held government policy and humiliation by junior teacher main causes.
Dr Sinha has so far contributed to Sasaram Medical College, Katihar Medical College, and Vardhman Institute of Medical Sciences Pawapuri, Nalanda (Bihar) after retirement from PMCH Dhanbad.
“Wrong contract policy of government discourages senior teachers of Jharkhand medical colleges to work in the state. As per contract policy, retired teachers can’t be made HoD. Secondly, the junior teacher humiliates him after rejoining on contract,” he said.
Dr Sinha said the retired professor wants respect and not money as he or she gets over Rs 55 to 60 lakh. But his junior who becomes HoD humiliates him in different ways.
“It is well known that Dr Vijay Shankar HoD medicine of PMCH signed a contract after retirement to work but Prof (Dr) SK Sinha who became the new HoD insulted him. It is said Dr SK Sinha even though he did not offer a chair to Dr Vijay Shankar and he finally cancelled his plan to join, she added.
Dr Kailash Prasad, HoD orthopaedics, was also willing to contribute to the college but his successor Prof (Dr) DP Bhushan did not show a respectable gesture to him resulting in Dr Prasad calling his plan of joining on contact off.
A similar incident happened with Prof RN Mishra, HoD physiology. After retirement, he accepted a contract of government but his subordinate Dr Krishna Kumari, who became HoD, humiliated him. Dr Mishra had to terminate his contract,” said Dr SRP Sinha.
Prof Rajnikant Sinha, who retired in November from SNMMCH, also did not have a good feeling and said that of course teachers gave him due respect but a section of management tried to harass him for the last year and he decided to lead retirement life rather working on contract.
However, some senior teachers Dr Kameswer Biswas, HoD anaesthesia, Dr Pratibha Rai, HoD gynaecology have joined on contract after retirement. Another teacher Dr Ashutosh Kumar of the ENT department joined Dumka medical college after retirement.
The retired senior teachers of medical colleges said they are willing to give a contribution as government offers a respectable amount but two times biometric attendance and undue interference of authorities discourage them to join on contract in Jharkhand medical colleges.
