Fake Job Posters Lure Jharkhand Girls Into Trafficking Networks, 200 Rescued in a Year

Ranchi: Posters offering immediate jobs with good salaries are a common sight on electric poles, walls, and crossroads across Ranchi and several other districts of Jharkhand. While not every placement agency behind such advertisements is fraudulent, police and social organisations have repeatedly uncovered human trafficking networks using these posters as bait to lure unemployed youth — particularly girls from rural areas — into dangerous situations.

How the Trap Works

When a girl calls the number on the poster, individuals posing as placement agency representatives first build trust, then collect documents including Aadhaar cards and educational certificates. Promises of good salary, accommodation, food, and safe employment are made before the girls are sent to states like Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. In several cases uncovered by police, victims were made to work under different conditions than promised, denied wages, restricted in their movement, and subjected to mental and physical abuse.

200 Girls Rescued in a Year

Over the past year, approximately 200 girls were rescued by police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from various districts and railway stations across Jharkhand under suspicious circumstances. During questioning, several revealed they were being taken to Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, and Bengaluru under the pretext of employment. Investigations led to action against several gangs.

Most Affected Districts

Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, Palamu, West Singhbhum (Chaibasa), and Ranchi have recorded the highest number of such cases, with gangs using promises of marriage, domestic work, and factory jobs to lure victims.

Poverty and Unemployment at the Root

Social workers say that poverty and lack of employment in rural Jharkhand disproportionately affect girls, with families sending daughters out of state in hope of a better future. Experts recommend awareness campaigns down to the panchayat level, education in schools and colleges about safe employment and trafficking risks, strict action against fake placement agencies, and verification of any job offer before acceptance.
