Melbourne, March 20: Shane Warne’s family and friends gathered in Melbourne on Sunday for a private burial to say their final goodbyes to the Australian cricket legend.
Around 80 people attended the funeral on Sunday, including Warne’s three children, parents, friends and retired Test captains Mark Taylor and Allan Border, as well as former England captain Michael Vaughan. Two Saints scarves were draped over the wooden coffin as pallbearers, including Warne’s son Jackson, carried it from the church to a lap of honour around Moorabbin Oval.
Notably, Warne was largely considered as one of the all-time great players. On March 4, he died while on vacation with friends on the Thai island of Samui. Warne (5) died after a suspected heart attack, according to an autopsy report. McGuire presided over the funeral and gave the eulogy. Just over a week ago, his remains were transported from Bangkok, Thailand to Melbourne.
On March 30, a state tribute will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which was the site of many of Warne’s memorable bowling exploits, including a hat-trick against England in 1994 and his 700th test wicket on Boxing Day in 2006. The ground’s Great Southern Stand will be renamed in Warne’s honour.
