Ambala: Punjab farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher confirmed on Monday that no ‘jatha’ (group) of farmers will resume the march to Delhi on Tuesday. Speaking at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, Pandher criticized the BJP-led central government for its inconsistent stance on the farmers’ protests.
Under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, farmers had attempted two marches on December 6 and December 8, both of which were stopped by Haryana security forces.
Pandher’s Remarks on Government Credibility
Pandher accused the government of being “confused” about how to handle the farmers’ protests. “Now Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar says farmers should come by other vehicles. Earlier, when he was Haryana’s Chief Minister, he insisted that farmers should march on foot. The government’s flip-flopping is lowering its credibility among the people,” Pandher said.
Khattar’s Comments on Farmers’ Protests
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar remarked that while farmers are not barred from going to Delhi, there are proper ways to protest. “There are so many vehicles; they can use those instead of walking,” Khattar said, taking a swipe at the protesters.
Pandher responded sharply, calling out the inconsistency in statements. “One minister says come on foot, another says use vehicles, and the Haryana Agriculture Minister says farmers are welcome, while Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini insists farmers must seek Delhi Police permission. This inconsistency is evident confusion,” he added.
Farmers’ Demands and Protest Camps
Protesting farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February 13, demanding:
•A legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
•A debt waiver for farmers and farm laborers.
•Pension schemes for farmers.
•Withdrawal of police cases against protesters.
•Justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
Pandher emphasized that their protests will continue until the government meets their demands.
