Washington, D.C.: The FBI has disclosed chilling new details about the New Year’s Day truck attack in New Orleans that claimed 14 lives. Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the assailant who carried out the deadly assault in the city’s French Quarter, was inspired by the Islamic State militant group, federal investigators revealed on Sunday.
FBI: Jabbar Recorded Videos While Plotting Attack
Jabbar, a former U.S. Army soldier, visited New Orleans twice before the attack, meticulously recording video footage of the French Quarter using Meta smart glasses. On October 31, he cycled through the area, capturing surveillance footage while plotting the attack.
FBI Special Agent Lyonel Myrthil stated, “Jabbar’s use of smart glasses underscores his level of planning. He used advanced technology to reconnoiter the area, leaving little to chance.”
On the day of the attack, Jabbar wore the same smart glasses, which were capable of livestreaming. However, officials confirmed they were not activated during the assault.
Links to Cairo and Ontario Under Investigation
Investigators are examining Jabbar’s international travel in the months leading up to the attack. He visited Cairo and Ontario in mid-2023, but it remains unclear if these trips were directly tied to his radicalization.
Bomb-Making Materials and Explosives Recovered
During the attack, Jabbar placed two explosive devices in the French Quarter. Quick police action ensured both devices were recovered before detonation. Investigators later found bomb-making materials, including the powerful compound RDX, at his Houston residence and New Orleans rental property.
ATF Special Agent Joshua Jackson praised law enforcement’s rapid response: “Their swift actions prevented what could have been an even greater tragedy.”
Deadliest IS-Inspired Attack in Years
Jabbar proclaimed support for the Islamic State in online videos posted hours before the attack. This incident, the deadliest IS-inspired attack on U.S. soil in recent years, underscores the enduring threat posed by extremist ideologies.
Increased Security Measures in New Orleans
In response to the attack, New Orleans authorities have bolstered security measures in high-profile areas like the French Quarter. Streets are being blocked off with barricades, and Mayor LaToya Cantrell has called for Homeland Security to enhance security protocols ahead of Mardi Gras.
Cantrell stated, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. This attack serves as a grim reminder of the need for constant vigilance.”
FBI Focuses on Potential Networks
While the FBI currently believes Jabbar acted alone, investigations continue into his possible connections with international extremist groups.
Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia remarked, “We are exploring all leads to uncover any individuals or networks that may have influenced Jabbar’s actions.”
President Biden to Visit New Orleans
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to visit New Orleans on Monday to meet with families of the victims. Biden stated, “This tragedy has deeply impacted the nation. My thoughts are with the families as we work to ensure such attacks are prevented in the future.”
