New Delhi, Aug 2: In Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, a female cheetah named “Dhatri” was discovered dead on Wednesday morning. To determine the cause of death, authorities are performing a post-mortem.
The Kuno National Park has experienced a string of cheetah deaths since 20 of the animals were brought there from South Africa and Namibia as part of the ambitious Project Cheetah programme. It is the goal of the project to bring back these magnificent cats, which went extinct in India about seven decades ago, to the country’s landscape.
Nine cheetahs have tragically passed away after they were reintroduced. Among them are three cubs that the imported cheetahs gave birth to.
Several variables have been implicated as the causes of these deaths. Intra-species conflicts, illnesses, mishaps before and after release, and wounds received while hunting are a few possible explanations, according to some specialists. Heatstroke and predatory animal attacks have also been mentioned as potential causes.
The placing of radio collars on cheetahs has also generated controversy. Some experts contend that the persistent moisture throughout the monsoon season caused by these collars, which are meant to track and monitor the animals, has resulted in skin illnesses. These infections apparently attracted flies, which caused maggot infestations and septicaemia, a dangerous blood ailment that proved fatal for some of the cheetahs.
