PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, April 6: A double-storeyed garment showroom Fashion World located at Jhanda Chowk in Sakchi caught fire due to a suspected short- circuit this afternoon.

The fire was first noticed at the godown of the showroom based on the first floor at around 1.15 pm.

The salesmen of the showroom soon informed the fire brigade.

Two fire tenders – one of the state government and the other belonging to Tata Steel took over an hour to control the fire.

The timely arrival of the fire tenders prevented it from spreading to the nearby shops.

The loss due to the fire was initially estimated to be several lakhs.

Fire mishaps during summers are common at the congested Sakchi market.

Last year two mishaps were reported from Sakchi.

Market sources said that most of the water hydrants at Sakchi market are lying defunct.

“Repairing of the hydrants is the need of the hour. The fire department should pay heed to it, ” pointed out a shopkeeper at Jhanda Chowk.
