Assam: The flood crisis in Assam has deepened, with over 78,000 people affected across more than 15 districts, and 10 major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, breaching the danger level, as torrential rain continues to pound the region. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has confirmed the death toll at eight, including five in landslides and three in floods.
Union support and CWC alert
Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured full support to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who shared that the Centre has promised all possible assistance. Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission (CWC) issued an orange bulletin, warning of a severe flood scenario. The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark at Dibrugarh and Nematighat (Jorhat). Other rivers above danger level include the Barak, Dhaleswari, Rukni, Katakhal, Buridehing, Kushiyara, Dhansiri, and Kopili.
Transport services hit hard
Floodwaters have severely disrupted rail, road, and ferry services. The Northeast Frontier Railway cancelled several passenger trains, and National Highway-17 was submerged near Shingra Shalnibari (Kamrup). Ferry operations between Jorhat and Majuli have also been suspended due to rising river levels.
IAF rescue in Bomjir
In a dramatic early-morning operation, the Indian Air Force rescued 14 people stranded in the Bomjir river near the Assam-Arunachal border. Tinsukia DC Swapneel Paul confirmed that an IAF helicopter carried out the rescue on his request, while Revenue Circle Officer Jaydeep Rajak coordinated the mission.
Heavy rainfall warnings continue
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued red alerts for three districts in western Assam and orange alerts for eight others. Rainwater flowing in from Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya is worsening the situation, prompting heightened caution.
Relief operations underway
Rescue and relief efforts are being carried out by multiple agencies including the NDRF, SDRF, state police, and fire services. Authorities have begun evacuations in high-risk areas, using alternative routes to maintain connectivity and supply lines.
