Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) conference in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Thursday, highlighting India’s rich heritage and democratic ethos. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi reflected on India’s legacy of peace and progress, stating, “When the world was expanding empires through the sword, Emperor Ashoka chose the path of peace. Inspired by this heritage, India today tells the world: the future lies not in war but in wisdom.”
Vision 2047: A Developed India
PM Modi reiterated his commitment to making India a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of independence. He lauded the contribution of the Indian diaspora in the country’s freedom struggle and its current global influence, describing them as India’s ambassadors. “India is now known as ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ (world’s friend). We aim to strengthen this identity further,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s responsibility to support overseas Indians in times of crisis, reinforcing the bond between India and its diaspora.
Odisha: A Reflection of India’s Rich Heritage
Speaking about Odisha’s cultural significance, PM Modi described it as a land where India’s heritage thrives. He recalled Odisha’s ancient trade routes connecting it to regions like Bali, Sumatra, and Java, which are still commemorated through events like the Bali Yatra.
Special Significance of This Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
PM Modi noted that this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas holds special meaning as it coincides with the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Praising Vajpayee’s vision, he credited him for establishing this platform to strengthen ties between India and its diaspora.
“This event celebrates India’s progress, culture, and roots while uniting global Indians,” he added.
Celebration of Festivals and Progress
PM Modi also highlighted India’s festive season, including upcoming events like Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela. He connected these celebrations with the presence of the diaspora, saying, “Your presence enhances the spirit of our festivals.”
Recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India on this day in 1915 after years abroad, Modi remarked that the occasion symbolized the transformative role of the Indian diaspora in the nation’s journey.
India’s Rapid Development and Global Standing
PM Modi spotlighted India’s achievements, from pulling 25 crore people out of poverty in the last decade to becoming the fifth-largest economy in the world. “The day is not far when India will become the third-largest economy,” he said, adding that initiatives like Chandrayaan and Digital India showcase India’s technological prowess.
Made in India: The Future
The Prime Minister shared his vision of India manufacturing its own fighter jets and transport aircraft. “Soon, Indian-made aircraft will bring you to Pravasi Bharatiya Divas,” he predicted. Stressing India’s mantra of “development and heritage,” he said India now represents not just its own vision but also the aspirations of the Global South.
Empowering India’s Skilled Youth
Highlighting India’s young and skilled workforce, PM Modi said, “India is not only a young nation but also a land of skilled youth. We are ensuring that Indian youth going abroad carry skills that make them stand out globally.”
The Prime Minister also referenced India’s G20 presidency, saying it provided an opportunity to showcase the nation’s diversity to the world by holding meetings in various corners of the country.
