New Delhi: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, currently on a bilateral visit to India, alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressed the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024 on October 25. Their discussions highlighted promising developments in the India-Germany partnership, which Chancellor Scholz described as a strategic collaboration to address global challenges and foster innovation.

Germany’s Open Door to Skilled Indian Talent
Chancellor Scholz emphasized Germany’s eagerness to attract skilled Indian workers, stating, “Talent is welcomed in the German labour market.” While tightening restrictions on irregular migration, he clarified that Germany remains open to skilled talent and is keen on strengthening workforce diversity by saying, “We can decide who comes.”

Strategic Partnership and Collaborative Roadmap
During the conference, PM Modi lauded Germany’s focused partnership, highlighting that “Our partnership has clarity; the future is bright.” A major takeaway was the collaborative roadmap on innovation and technology, paving the way for joint initiatives in research and development. Additionally, both nations endorsed a green hydrogen roadmap, with Germany aiming to play a key role as India establishes itself as a “global hub of green hydrogen,” as Scholz put it.

Global and Regional Stability Talks
The leaders also addressed pressing global issues, notably the Ukraine conflict. PM Modi advocated for diplomacy, underscoring that “Solutions cannot come on the battlefield.” Chancellor Scholz highlighted Ukraine’s sovereignty and the necessity for global cooperation, stating, “Ukraine’s integrity and sovereignty needs to be observed.” Furthermore, Scholz called for peace in the Middle East, urging a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and progress toward a two-state solution through dialogue.

Education Collaboration
Signifying a deeper educational partnership, Dresden University and IIT Madras signed a dual degree agreement, reinforcing educational ties and a shared commitment to nurturing global talent.

Commitment to Regional Stability
Chancellor Scholz praised India’s regional role, noting, “India is the anchor of stability in South Asia,” and expressed appreciation for PM Modi’s balanced approach to the Ukraine conflict.

This visit reaffirms the strong India-Germany partnership, with both leaders optimistic about addressing global challenges together. Chancellor Scholz emphasized, “We value India as a partner,” marking a future of robust collaboration.
