Dhanbad, April 18: A senior police officer of Naxal-affected Giridih district ferried over 70 km to donate blood to a helpless poor tribal girl.
Dilshan Birua, the officer-in-charge of Naxals-affected Pirtand police station of Giridih district covered a 70 km distance to reach Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad to donate blood to the patient admitted to the gynaecological ward.
Anaemic tribal girl Sona Muni (18), a resident of Pandnatand village of Pirtand police station was referred to SNMMCH Dhanbad by Giridih Sadar hospital in a critical condition. She was admitted to the gynaecology ward. Her condition was diagnosed as ‘anaemia under evaluation’.
The doctors of the ward on Sunday morning asked the patient’s attendant to arrange three units of blood (O+) immediately.
Since the patient’s family members had neither money nor any acquaintance in Dhanbad to arrange the blood, they informed the situation in their village in Pirtand block of Giridih asking for help.
“I saw the appeal by the patient’s family on social media at 10 am. I contacted the father of the patient, Darshan Soren and took detailed information about the girl. Rather than asking someone to donate blood, I decided to go to Dhanbad myself and hired a car for the same,” said Dilshan Birua, the officer-in-charge.
He reached the medical college hospital at 1 pm. Since doctors had asked for three units of blood, Dilshan Birua lined up two Sub Inspectors (SI) Randhir Kumar and Sangrah Singh in Dhanbad and reached SNMMCH for donation. However, after one unit of blood donation by Dilshan Birua, the doctors did not require it further.
“The doctors did not need it at that time but I gave the mobile numbers of Randhir and Sangram to the girl’s father and asked him to call them if he requires blood afterwards,” the officer further said.
Dilshan Birua (30) has been donating blood to needy patients from his college days and reaches the spot at his own expense to extend help across the state in cases of emergency.
