Surat, March 23: A Surat Court in Gujarat, on Thursday convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in a 2019 defamation case for his remark ‘all thieves have Modi surname.’ The court sentenced Congress MP to two years of imprisonment.

On a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi on his statement, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”, the case was filed.

The sentence would remain suspended for the time being to enable him to file appeal.

Purnesh Modi, filed a petition in court, alleging that Gandhi defamed everyone with the surname ‘Modi’ by making this comment. He, therefore, filed a defamation suit against Rahul Gandhi.
