New Delhi, May 18: Hockey India picked a nine-man men’s hockey team on Wednesday to compete in the first edition of the FIH Hockey 5s, which will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland on June 5 and 6. Malaysia, Pakistan, Poland, and hosts Switzerland will face the Indian men’s squad.
Gurinder Singh will captain the team, while Sumit will serve as vice-captain.
The team includes members of the Olympic bronze medal-winning group as well as those who competed in the FIH Junior World Cup last year. Pawan, the goalkeeper, and the defenders Sanjay, Mandeep Mor, and Gurinder Singh are among them. Sumit and Rabichandra Singh, as well as Dilpreet Singh, Mohd Raheel Mouseen, and Gursahibjit Singh, have been called up.
Pawan, Sanjay, and Rabichandra were also members of the silver-medal winning Indian team at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, where the Hockey 5s format was played. Last year, they competed in the Junior Men’s World Cup in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and Sumit and Dilpreet Singh were members of the Olympic team in Tokyo.
The team is expected to depart Bengaluru on June 1, 2022.
