New Delhi, Jan 31: The Supreme Court on Monday decided to hear a petition filed by former Rajya Sabha MP Mohammed Adeeb seeking contempt action against Haryana officers for allegedly failing to prevent occurrences during Muslim Friday prayers.
“This is not simply based on press reporting; we have also filed complaints,” senior advocate Indira Jaising told a bench chaired by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana.
“We are not asking for any enforcement of FIR. This court has laid down preventive measures,” She further added.
“I’ll look into it and post before the appropriate bench…” the Chief Justice stated after hearing brief submissions in the case.
According to the appeal, the state government machinery is failing to take meaningful measures to avoid these incidences in Gurugram.
According to the petition, there has been a steady increase in occurrences involving Friday prayers delivered by Muslims at the demand of certain “identifiable hooligans” in recent months. These hooligans misrepresent themselves in the name of religion and want to incite hatred and prejudice towards a population in the city.
The petition demanded that the state government’s senior IAS and IPS officers be prosecuted. The petition claimed that the Haryana government had failed to follow the Supreme Court’s directives in the Tehseen S. Poonawalla case, and demanded contempt action.
In 2018, the Supreme Court issued a spate of orders prohibiting hate crimes such as mob violence and lynching.
