Haveri: Karnataka Police are seeking to cancel the bail of seven accused in the Hanagal gang rape case after a video surfaced showing them celebrating their release with a convoy of cars, loud music, and victory signs. The incident triggered public outrage and prompted swift action from law enforcement.
Procession triggers FIR, police secure five accused
The video showed the accused parading through Akki Alur town in a five-car convoy, accompanied by supporters on bikes and in vehicles. One of the accused stood through a car sunroof, flashing victory signs, while the group recorded the spectacle and shared it on social media.
Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar confirmed that the rally was conducted while returning from sub-jail to Akkihalur. A case has now been registered at Hanagal Police Station under sections 189/2, 191/2, 281, 351/2, 351/3, and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Violation of bail terms, accused to face court
Police said five of the accused have been taken into custody and will be produced in court. Authorities have also confirmed plans to move for bail cancellation on grounds of violation of bail conditions and public nuisance.
The accused—Aftab Chandanakatti, Madar Saab Mandakki, Samiwulla Lalanavar, Mohammad Sadiq Agasimani, Shoib Mulla, Tausip Choti, and Riyaz Savikeri—were earlier granted bail on May 20.
Background of the Hanagal case
The gang rape case dates back to January 2024, when several men stormed into a hotel room occupied by an interfaith couple. Initially reported as a case of moral policing, the survivor later alleged that she was abducted and gang raped in a nearby forest.
