Hazaribag, Aug 24: A herd of 29 elephants destroyed three houses and trampled crops in Dharampur village of Tatijharia on Wednesday night. So far, villagers of Tatijharia have suffered huge losses as the herd damaged many houses and standing crops.

Last night, elephants demolished the kutcha houses and standing crops in Dharampur village belonging to  Jeetan Yadav, Taleshwar Prajapati, Ruchan Prajapati, Sukar Prajapati, Bhuneshwar Yadav, Sahdev Yadav, Janki Mahto, Mahadev Mahali, Tilak Saw, Ballon Mahto, Chakkan Yadav, Surendra Prasad Yadav, Jodhi Bhuiyan and Pintu Yadav. The elephants broke the window of the house and licked the rice.

Elephants not only demolished Raghu Bhuiyan’s house but devoured one quintal of rice and destroyed the bed, box and other household items. Raghu said last year also elephants had broken his house.

Villagers said they are fed up with the elephants and due to them their houses, crops and lives are under threat. So far, no concrete initiative has been taken by the forest department to evict the elephants from the area and send them to a safer place. Due to this, anger is seen among the villagers. However, officials said they are taking steps to chase away the animals.
