Shimla, July 9: A family’s house in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, collapsed on Sunday, killing three family members and injuring two, the police reported.

The event happened early on Sunday near Shimla’s Kotgarh village, according to officials.

After a rescue operation, the victims were pulled from the debris and sent to a neighbouring hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.

“The deceased have been identified as Anil, Kiran, and Swapnil, and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. We are further looking into the incident,” Shimla Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said.

In the early hours of Sunday, Gramphu village and Chota Dharra both experienced flash floods and landslides. There were no reported casualties in the incident.

“District Emergency Operation Center Lahaul Spiti informed an incident of Flash Flood and Landslide reported along the AEC BRO 94 RCC, NH 505 (Sumdo Kaza-Gramphu) which is blocked at different locations between Gramphu to Chota Dharra,” an official statement issued by Himachal Pradesh State Emergency Operations Centre (HPSEOC), informed.

A group of 30 college students who were struck on the road by a landslide were successfully rescued, according to the HP SEOC.

“A Group of 30 College Students travelling on Bhavna Travelers (2 Travelers’ vehicle) from Spiti to Manali. They were stuck on the road due to road blocking. All 30 College students were rescued safely,” the statement read further.

Once the weather improves, men and resources will be dispatched to clean the debris, according to officials.

Flash floods and torrential rains wreaked havoc in different parts of Himachal Pradesh early on Thursday, causing stores and vehicles to be washed away as well as two ladies to be buried alive under debris following a landslide in the Kullu district.

As the state continued to experience heavy rain, the India Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a red alert for seven districts of the state and an orange alert for three districts for the next 48 hours.

IMD also issued alerts for flash floods, landslides in the state.

“A red alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts. Most places in the state will receive rainfall. An orange alert has been issued for Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts,” IMD HP deputy director Bui Lal said.

He added that the state government had received a forecast update and that a yellow alert had been issued for the Lahaul and Spiti regions.
