Dhanbad, Nov 21: Noted mining expert and senior professor of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad Prof AK Mishra today took over the charge as the new director of Central Institute Mineral Fuel Research (CIMFR).
He took the charge from caretaker director Sudha Satwa Basu, who is the director of IIMT Bhubaneswar. The post of CIMFR director had been vacant for one year after the retirement of Dr PK Singh.
Prof Mishra, the HoD of the mining engineering department, has served IIT ISM for the last 22 years. He is considered an expert engineer in mining fielding, especially in open cast and drilling. Besides it, he also has vast experience in technical teaching, industry and administrative line.
In 2016, he got the prestigious Geosciences National Award of the ministry of science from the President of India. Earlier in 2012, Prof Mishra got the Abhiraj Baldota Memorial Award which is given to young and promising engineers in the country.
Prof Mishra completed B. Tech and M.Tech from NIT Raipur and PhD from the Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad in mining engineering. He is also a member of the mining research scientists team at Stanford University.
Before joining in teaching and research field after PhD, Prof worked as a mining engineer at Coal India Limited (CIL) and worked in USA Mining Services, as a technical service manager in Australia and led technical service in Indian Trade Mela for four years.
CIMFR scientists said Prof Mishra has major contributions in the open cast and underground mining technology, drilling and blasting technology, rock excavation technology, ground control and straight management area. He has also played a major role in designing railway line projects in Jammu and Kashmir, formation cutting and slope stability in Himalayas and others.
Apart from that, he has also given technical advice to mining companies in over 20 countries including Germany, France, China and others.
