Dhanbad, Mar 14: Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar, professor of geostatistics in the department of Applied Geology of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has been awarded the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA) of IIT Kharagpur.
IIT director Prof V K Tiwari presented the award to Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar for his professional contributions, achievement, leadership and peer recognition during the institution’s award ceremony last evening.
Prof Sarkar, PhD and DIC (from London) has authored a large number of quality research papers and books on technical education, industry and academics in his 41 years of professional life so far.
Before joining ISM in 1989, Prof Sarkar served Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited MECL) for two years 1980-81, Hindustan Zinc Limited ( 1981-89. He has also served AICTE, New Delhi as director from 1997 to 1998.
Prof Sarkar led the department of Applied Geology ISM as head of the department in 2010-12 and is founder head of the civil engineering department ( 2013-14). He is also credited with representing the government committee in the ministry of mines as an expert member of NMET and Geoscience Advisory Council. He is also vice-president of the Indian Geological Congress.
“This is a great honour for me to receive this award from IIT Kharagpur. I owe outlook, thoughts, ideas and professional acumen to all my teachers of IIT Kharagpur who have instilled in me the power of knowledge and a deep sense of discipline,” said Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar.
Prof Sarkar did his five years integrated M.Sc in Applied Geology from IIT Kharagpur in 1975-80.
IIT Kharagpur has selected Prof Sarkar of IIT ISM Dhanbad on the recommendation of the Standing Committee and approval of the Chairman of the Board of Governors for this award.
The members of different faculties of IIT ISM have highly appreciated the achievement of Prof Sarkar and congratulated him for this award.
