New Delhi, June 29: Jasprit Bumrah will lead the Indian team in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, which will take place in Birmingham and begin on July 1.
Notably on Saturday, Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid, and he has been kept in isolation ever since.
The management of the squad has appointed Bumrah, who was appointed India’s Test vice-captain in South Africa earlier this year, as stand-in skipper for the fifth Test. Notably, Bumrah will lead India in the game’s longest format, becoming the first fast bowler to do so since the illustrious Kapil Dev.
The decision about Rohit Sharma’s availability will be made the night before the Test match. On Thursday, Rohit will go through another round of Covid-19 testing, but it’s unlikely that he will be fit for the eagerly awaited 5th Test, a continuation of the series from the previous year.
Notably, India was captained by Rohit Sharma for the four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire, which began on June 23. In the first innings, Rohit batted for India and partnered with Shubman Gill to open the scoring with 25 runs. He didn’t, however, come out to start India’s batting in the second innings, which raised questions.
