New Delhi, Dec 5: Team India was fined on Monday for playing slowly against Bangladesh in the opening ODI in Mirpur, and the players had to pay back 80% of their match fee.
On Sunday, India dropped the first match of the three-match series by one wicket. When India was determined to be four overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into account, ICC elite panel match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the sanction.
Players are fined 20% of their match fee for each over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate offenses.
There was no need for a formal hearing because India captain Rohit Sharma admitted wrongdoing and agreed to the suggested punishment, the ICC said in a statement.
The accusation was levelled by the on-field umpires Michael Gough and Tanvir Ahmed, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel. On Wednesday, the second ODI will be played here.
