New Delhi, Feb 9: Lalu Prasad Yadav, the leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, unleashed a harsh attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the country was on the verge of civil war under the current government.

“BJP has only been talking about riots and temples, which openly shows the party’s frustration about losing the polls,” said Lalu Yadav.

“More than 70 years ago, our ancestors made the British leave this country but now the British have returned in the form of BJP… We support Samajwadi Party in UP polls,” the RJD chief added

On Thursday, the first of seven phases of elections in Uttar Pradesh begins, with 58 Assembly seats across 11 districts going to the polls. On February 14, 20, 23, 27, and March 3 and 7, the remaining phases will be held. On March 10, the votes will be counted and the results will be announced.

On Tuesday evening, the first phase of assembly elections in western Uttar Pradesh came to a close.

The BJP secured an overwhelming three-quarters majority of 325 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, creating the government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. The party is hoping to win re-election for the second time in a row.
