New Delhi, March 26: The Ministry of External Affairs summoned the High Commissioner of Canada on Saturday due to the security breach at the Indian embassy in Ottawa.
In a statement released on Sunday, MEA stated, “The High Commissioner of Canada was summoned yesterday to convey our strong concern about the actions of separatist and extremist elements against our diplomatic Mission and Consulates in Canada this week.”
According to the MEA statement, the Indian government demanded an explanation for how such individuals were permitted to violate the security of India’s consulates and diplomatic posts in the presence of police.
“The Government of Canada was reminded of its obligations under the Vienna Convention and was asked to arrest and prosecute the individuals who have already been identified as being involved in such acts,” the statement read further.
MEA anticipates that the Canadian government would take decisive action against such anti-India separatist elements.
“It is expected that the Canadian government will take all steps which are required to ensure the safety of our diplomats and security of our diplomatic premises so that they are able to fulfill their normal diplomatic functions,” the release said.
Supporters of Khalistan purportedly demonstrated last week in front of the Indian Embassy in Canada. They shouted “pro-Khalistan” and allegedly assaulted journalists of Indian descent who were present.
Once a manhunt for separatist leader Amritpal Singh began in India and hundreds of his aides were detained there, supporters of Khalistan began attacking Indian consulates.
After Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, the High Commission of India in Canada was also targeted by Khalistani supporters this week.
Khalistani flags were used to vandalise the honorary consulate of India earlier in February. Lately, pro-Khalistan supporters also stormed Indian consulates in the United Kingdom and the United States.
