Washington, March 17: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was ordered to stop by the UN’s top court on Wednesday. The Russian Federation asked to immediately cease military activities on Ukrainian territory that began on February 24.
“The court is profoundly concerned about the use of force by the Russian Federation which raises very serious issues in international law,” Justice Donoghue said.
Days after Russia’s attack on February 24, Kyiv took Moscow to the UN’s top court.
Meanwhile, Justice Dalveer Bhandari, India’s ICJ judge, voted against Russia as well. Justice Bhandari was nominated to the International Court of Justice fully on the basis of the government’s and various embassies’ support throughout time.
Though an independent decision based on his perception of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Justice Bhandari’s vote against Russia differs from India’s official position in many international fora.
Notably, India has abstained from voting at the United Nations on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, instead urging both sides to focus on diplomacy and ending hostilities.
