New Delhi, May 9: The family of a teenager with special disability who was denied boarding a plane with his parents at the Ranchi airport on Saturday received an apology and ‘sincere regrets’ from IndiGo airline on Monday. The airline stated it had looked into the case and ‘taken the best judgement possible under tough circumstances.’
The airline has also offered the teenager an electric wheelchair. Ronojoy Dutta, Whole Time Director and Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, has issued the statement.
“We had a very unfortunate incident at Ranchi airport on May 07, 2022, when a specially-abled teenager and his parents could not board their scheduled flight to Hyderabad,” the statement reads.
It went on to say that the incident has deeply affected all of IndiGo’s employees. According to the airline, airport personnel were obliged to make a difficult judgement based on safety requirements about whether the commotion would continue aboard the plane.
“All of us at IndiGo are truly distressed by this particular incident. Since April 2022 we have carried over 75k specially-abled passengers aboard our airline and our crew and airport staff are trained to serve such passengers sensitively,” the statement further added.
Indigo further said that the airline would like to offer to purchase an electric wheelchair for their son.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Minister of Aviation, indicated earlier in the day that he is personally investigating the situation and that “necessary action” will be taken. IndiGo has also been asked to provide a report to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
