Ranchi: Sunil Meena, alias Mayank Singh, a notorious criminal linked to the Aman Sahu and Lawrence Bishnoi gangs, has been apprehended in Azerbaijan by Interpol. Meena, who had long been a significant challenge for Jharkhand Police, was captured following a Red Corner Notice issued at the request of Jharkhand’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
While the arrest has not been officially confirmed by Jharkhand Police, efforts are underway to bring Meena back to India under the extradition treaty.
Meena’s Criminal Past and Network Expansion
Originally from Gadsana, Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, Sunil Meena was closely associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, known for high-profile criminal activities in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. Meena reportedly started his criminal journey while living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he came into contact with key gang members like Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara.
Meena’s involvement in crimes ranged from extortion and firing incidents to organized killings, often carried out at the behest of Lawrence Bishnoi.
Notorious Acts in Rajasthan
Meena first gained notoriety in Rajasthan when he demanded extortion from Congress MLA Govind Ram Meghwal. Acting on instructions from Bishnoi, he also targeted a petrol pump owner, demanding ₹5 crore. When the demand was refused, Meena orchestrated a firing attack on the petrol pump.
These actions led Rajasthan Police to prepare a detailed dossier and initiate efforts for issuing a Red Corner Notice against him.
Role in Aman Sahu Gang
Expanding his criminal activities, Meena became a significant operative for Jharkhand-based Aman Sahu gang. He allegedly facilitated recruitment for criminal operations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Meena was also involved in high-profile attacks, including a firing incident at the Raipur headquarters of RKTC, a coal transport company, targeting its directors.
Global Movements and Capture
After his Indian passport was canceled by the ATS, Meena reportedly used the “donkey route” to travel through Singapore, Iran, and Mexico before entering the United States. Despite these efforts to evade capture, he was tracked and arrested in Azerbaijan.
Next Steps
Jharkhand Police is now preparing for Meena’s extradition, leveraging international cooperation. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in curbing the operations of both Aman Sahu and Lawrence Bishnoi gangs, which have been responsible for several violent crimes across India.
