New Delhi, March 15: Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson was named as the Delhi Capitals’ new Assistant Coach for the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season on Tuesday (March 15).
Ricky Ponting (Head Coach), Pravin Amre (Assistant Coach), Ajit Agarkar (Assistant Coach), and James Hopes make up the DC coaching team (Bowling Coach).
“The IPL, the best T20 tournament in the world. I’ve got incredible memories as a player, first of all with Rajasthan Royals winning it in 2008, led by the incredible man Shane Warne, RCB and then CSK. I’ve got incredible memories as a player, and now coaching opportunities. It’s come to be able to work under the great Ricky Ponting. He was an amazing leader as a captain, and now to be able to coach under him. He is one of the best coaches in the world now. So, for me to be able to learn the ropes under Ricky, I am really excited,” said Shane Watson.
Notably Watson, regarded as one of the top all-rounders in white ball cricket, has played in two of Australia’s World Cup-winning 50-over campaigns, in 2007 and 2015. He was selected Player of the Tournament at the 2012 T20 World Cup. Watto has over 7000 runs and over 200 wickets in limited overs cricket after playing in 190 ODIs and 58 T20Is for his country.
In the IPL, the Queenslander has represented Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Chennai Super Kings, winning the trophy twice — in 2008 with RR and in 2018 with CSK. Watson has 3875 runs and 92 wickets in the IPL, and his consistency has earned him praise as one of the tournament’s top all-rounders.
