Imphal, June 1: An official order stated that senior IPS officer Rajiv Singh, who is from the nearby Tripura cadre, was appointed as the new director general of police (DGP) of Manipur on Thursday for a three-year term “as a special case in the public interest”.

P Doungel, a 1987 batch IPS officer from Manipur, has been replaced by Singh, a 1993 batch IPS officer who was serving as the inspector general of operations at the CRPF headquarters in Delhi. For P Doungel, a post of Officer on Special Duty (Home) has been created. At the end of the month, he will be retiring.

According to an official order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Singh’s inter-cadre deputation from the Tripura cadre to the Manipur cadre, “for a period of three years from the date of joining, in relaxation of the policy as a special case in public interest”.

Amit Shah, speaking at a press conference in Imphal earlier in the day, announced that a committee led by a retired high court judge has been established by the national government to oversee a special CBI team’s inquiry into violent incidents in Manipur.

To mediate peace between warring communities, the home minister is in Manipur for four days. He presided over gatherings with security forces and government representatives and held conversations with various stakeholders while on his visit to the state.

“I have visited several places in Manipur in the last three days, including Imphal, Moreh, and Churachandpur and held meetings with officials to establish peace in the state. I have met CSOs of Meitei and Kuki communities,” Amit Shah said.
