New Delhi, Nov 28: Reza Dormishian, an Iranian director, has been denied entry to the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa as a result of his support for anti-hijab demonstrations in the Islamic Republic, according to Iranian officials.

Variety reports that Dormishian is the most recent Iranian film industry figure to be subject to penalties by the Iranian regime as a result of his voicing of anti-regime views.

For his produced film ‘A Minor,’ Dormishian received an invitation from the IFFI. Dariush Mehrjui’s film was slated to screen as part of the competition. However, the Iranian government did not grant him permission to leave the nation.

Although Dormishian had his passport removed at the airport, it was unclear at the time whether or not the director had been arrested. According to the article, the filmmaker’s recent social media criticism of the Iranian government is thought to be a direct cause of the actions taken against him.

Notably, Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman’s death in the custody of the morality police resulted in widespread anti-hijab protests and Dormishian has been sharing various posts on his Instagram account to show support. She was taken into custody for breaking the nation’s stringent dress codes for women.

According to Variety, two Iranian filmmakers Mohammad Rosoulof and Mostafa Al-Ahmad were previously imprisoned in July for posting a message on social media following a violent government arrest.

Iran has since imposed travel restrictions on at least three filmmakers. Mani Haghighi, an Iranian filmmaker, was about to travel to the BFI London Film Festival in October when his passport was taken at the airport.
