New Delhi, Dec 1: Security personnel allegedly shot and killed an Iranian for celebrating the Iranian football team’s exit from the FIFA World Cup being played in Qatar.
Human rights groups claim that Mehran Samak (27), was shot dead in Bandar Anzali after sounding his car horn. Samak was allegedly celebrating Iran’s soccer team’s defeat by the US, which disqualified Iran from the competition.
Since the Islamic revolution that took place in Iran in 1979, the US and Iran are the most bitter rivals ever establishing the Islamic Republic under the leadership of Ruhollah Khomeini.
Earlier, the Iranian national football team declined to perform the national anthem before their opening World Cup match against England, ostensibly in support of anti-hijab demonstrations taking place at home.
Later, during the Group B match against Wales, the Iranian players resumed chanting the national anthem.
Iran has been working hard to quell the violent demonstrations that started after Mahasa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, allegedly died while being held in custody.
