IRS officer SK Agarwal takes over as CBIC Chairman

New Delhi, August 7: IRS officer Sanjay Kumar Agarwal is now in charge of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

”Sh. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, IRS (C&IT:1988) takes over as Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) w.e.f August 05, 2023,” the CBIC tweeted.

Agarwal succeeds Vivek Johri, who left his position as CBIC director on May 31.

The Finance Ministry appointed Agarwal, who was head of CBIC member compliance management in an order that was issued on August 5.

Before this, Agarwal’s role involved supervising compliance management and conducting investigations in their capacity as a member of CBIC.

The CBIC, which oversees the policy-making process for indirect taxes such as GST, customs and excise, is led by a chairman and has six board members. Principal Chief Commissioners/Chief Commissioners and Principal Director Generals/Director Generals assist the board.
