Jerusalem: An Israeli drone strike targeted a car in Sidon, a port city in southern Lebanon, on Monday, killing one person, according to Lebanon’s state news agency. The identity of the victim remains unclear, and the Israeli military has not issued a statement regarding the attack.
This marks the deepest strike in Lebanon since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect in late November.
Strike Near Lebanese Army Checkpoint
The attack took place near a Lebanese army checkpoint and Sidon’s municipal sports stadium. Footage circulating online shows the targeted vehicle engulfed in flames.
Tensions Rise Ahead of Israeli Withdrawal Deadline
The strike comes a day before the February 18 deadline for Israel’s full withdrawal from southern Lebanon, as outlined in the ceasefire agreement that ended the 14-month war with Hezbollah.
Initially, the withdrawal was scheduled for late January, but under Israeli pressure, Lebanon agreed to extend it. However, it remains uncertain whether Israeli troops will complete their pullout by Tuesday.
Continued Strikes Despite Ceasefire
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has continued launching airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon, claiming to target military sites containing missiles and combat equipment. Meanwhile, both Israel and Lebanon have accused each other of violating the truce agreement.
