New Delhi, June 30: Ben Stokes’ team named their starting XI for the fifth rescheduled Test against India, which will begin on July 1 at Edgbaston, and James Anderson, was welcomed back to the England squad.
England’s pace attack will also include Matthew Potts of Durham and Stuart Broad, while Jack Leach is the only spinner. After a remarkable series victory over New Zealand, newly appointed full-time captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum will take on their second task.
Despite bowling during breaks in the Test, Anderson, who turns 40 next month, was unable to participate in his team’s 3-0 victory over the current World Test champions New Zealand at Headingley due to a puffy ankle.
India’s fifth Test match at Old Trafford, where they were leading 2-1, was called off last September because of worries over a COVID-19 epidemic in their camp. The rescheduled Test match may differ greatly from the original series’ events, which featured a defensive England team led by Joe Root as captain.
England playing XI: Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonathan Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Sam Billings (wk), Matthew Potts, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.
